I rate this game 5/5 because of how much I love the combat system. They are all subdivided into their spell level, and spells that can be cast at a higher level for added good times have a little “+” button, allowing you to pick exactly how many Magic Missiles you are spraying across the battlefield like so many shots from Halo’s Needler.

You click “Cast Spell” and you are met with several blocks of eligible spells with colorful artwork depicting white silhouettes of the victims or beneficiaries of the spells. Perhaps you don’t have a direct line of sight to the desired target of your individual-direct-damage spell, and while you could hit 3 baddies with Fireball, you’d also take your fighter and monk down past bloodied, so you’re about set to, I dunno, go hide and hold action on a cantrip? Oh wait, see, if this was a paper character sheet, I’m gonna forget the weird plot point item I received awhile back the that also has a charge of Misty Step on it - let’s use that and OH WEIRD I’M SUDDENLY IN LINE OF SIGHT time to cast a damage cantrip because I already used a bonus action to cast a spell.įinally, Spells. Inventory is also in this row of buttons, and this is great because in a turn-based combat situation, you wanna make sure you’ve explored all of your options. Even if it guesses wrong, it’s a small-button click away to get to the desired bonus-eligible action. The bonus actions are laid out similarly to the Attack actions, with the bigger box of the section being somewhat arbitrary but also sort of a “smart” guess on what you might do next. Playing a Melee Rogue generally starts with a bonus action to disengage from your combatant and then go use the action to sneak attack someone else. As we know, not every class benefits in the same way from Bonus Actions. Next to that is the Bonus Action section. Next to that is your move action in a different-colored box to distinguish it from the Attack actions. There are smaller boxes next to the primary action to allow you to take the OTHER eligible actions - dodge, disengage, hide, etc. There’s a big box to represent Melee or Ranged attack, for example, or Cast Spell.

It starts on the left with your Attack-type action, based on class/equipment. Everything also has GREAT hover text displays to pretty thoroughly explain what’s going on. As you click through the eligible actions, subsequently consuming them for the round, they vanish from the UI, to refresh upon the next turn. So the action bar takes up the bottom… 15% of your screen - whatever number isn’t intrusive on the game unfolding in front of you. The action bar should win awards, this thing is so good.

You have an action bar at the bottom of the screen that’s laid out in a color-coded fashion reminiscent of the organization sensibilities of Windows Metro - except you don’t hate it.

Throughout the game, you control your party like you are accustomed to in ISO CRPGs - control the party, control 1 character, click for them to move to a place, click the highlighted object to interact, etc. Where this game shines is helping the player access ALL of their abilities as a D&D character with class features, special item effects, spells, etc, and being able to effectively use them in combat.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is not going to be an intensely popular game, and it’s a crying shame, because for any and every spot where it doesn’t match up to more popular games in the genre, the combat engine is nothing short of the digitization of the most involved Matt Mercer 3D battle setup you can imagine. If you're expecting Divinity: Original Sin, except more explicitly D&D, just go play Baldur's Gate III.

It's quite literally what I wish any fantasy d20 tabletop simulator was. Tl dr: If you're a bigtime D&D/d20 nerd and you love everything the 5E SRD is and can be, play this game because you will weep when you see the Daylight spell cast at night, 15ft above the ground, in a crypt, with vampire spawn crawling all around you, and that's basically the deciding factor in you getting out alive.
